Moroccan Meatballs Spiced in Tomato Sauce

The moroccan name for meatballs is Kefta or Kofta.  The typical traditional moroccan meatballs or Kofta Tagine is made up of spiced meatballs with Tomato sauce.  We like to add melted gouda to our moroccan meatballs as it gives this dish a unique flavor !

Moroccan Meatballs with Spicy Tomato Sauce

Ingredients: (serves 4)

Spices for Meatballs:

  • 1 1/2 pound ground meat (your choice of lamb or beef)
  • 1 grated onion
  • 2 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 Ras el hanout (optional)
  • Salt and pepper

Ingredients for the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves thinly diced
  • 14 ounce can diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • Salt and pepper

For topping (Optional):

  • 1 cup grated gouda or your choice of cheese


  1. In a large pan, heat the oil and add the garlic until slightly golden.  Stir in the diced tomatoes, spices, and parsley and let it cook for 5 minutes under reduced heat.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl,  mix the ground meat with the spices, onion, herbs and shape it into small balls.
  3. Add the meatballs to the tomato sauce, cover the pan and let it cook gently for 20 minutes.
  4. Just before serving top the meatballs with gouda cheese and bake until the cheese melts.
  5. Serve with your choice of bread or pasta.
