Michelle Obama is visiting Morocco, accompanied by her daughters, Malia and Sasha and her mother, Marian Robinson. At her arrival, the First Lady and her family were welcomed by Princess Lalla Salma, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI wife.
Obama was joined later by actress Meryl Streep for a discussion with local girls, as part of the campaign for girls’ education. The “Let Girls Learn” initiative aims to give 62 million girls around the world who don’t actually have access to education, the opportunity to go to school.
A $100 million investment from the Millennium Challenge Account was announced for Morocco, to tackle the problems that prevent girls to access to education. The project is targeting about 100,000 beneficiaries.
In a statement, the US first Lady said “I am so proud that the U.S. is working with the Moroccan Government to make these transformative new investments to educate and empower girls across Morocco–investments that will help these girls succeed in the workforce and fulfill their boundless promise”.
Obama is expected to travel to Spain next in early July as part of the Let Girls Learn Initiative
